Round 2?

Post by Nokturnal » Tue May 20, 2008 5:27 am

As some of you already know, the last PC that I bought didn't work out too well. I bought it mainly for gaming and it failed. It wouldn't even let me install games! Maybe my girlfriend sabotaged it? Who knows...anyways, I'm going to try and build one on my own. I've built PCs before, I'm just not that great at picking parts. That's where you guys come in! Here's a list of what I'm thinking about buying from newegg:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115037

Mobo - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128059

Video - EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130318

PSU - OCZ GameXStream 700W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817341002

CPU fan - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835186134

HD - Wester Digital 500 GB 7200 rpm Sata 3.0GB/s OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136073

Case - Cooler Master Centurion 5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811119068

OS - Windows Vista 64 Home Premium with SP1 OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116488

I'm also purchasing Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound, Arctic Silver Thermal material Remover and Surface Purifier, 10x 80mm case fans (because it was cheaper to buy 10 and free shipping!), and an eDimensional USB headset.

Total price (including taxes and 3 day shipping): $1124.19

I already have 2x 1gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 PC6400 RAM, which cost about $54 and I also need a DVD burner, which is like $25. Still cheaper than the last PC. Please, please make suggestions. I'm hoping to finalize this order tomorrow night, so that it will be here by the weekend. Thanks!

that is almost he exact build i used on my Home theater PC, If you are ever going to Overclock that 8400 (its so easy to do it almost does itself) i would change one thing.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835233012 its about $10 more but if you go out and read some cooler reviews (ok read lots) its a bit better and its quiet!

Man i am sure other then the cooler (ok and maybe RAM) its the exact build i did for my living room one. It works flawless for me.. got 3.8 out of it without a voltage bump too!

good luck

That's nearly the exact same rig as mine! Word of warning: my Arctic Cooler fan didn't fit into the mid tower I bought ("Smilodon" is the case's name)...

Also, the 8800GT runs HOT and turning the fan to 60-100% which is needed to keep it cool while playing games like AoC results in a lot of noise.

Oh and I guess one major difference in our setups is that I bought a quad-core chip (the cheapest version). My thoughts on that were that I almost always multi-task while gaming or doing anything really. I also have 8GB mushkin RAM ;)

Also, I had no problem cleaning my surfaces with plain old $0.75 rubbing alcohol and some cotton swabs... and I do have that same thermal paste. I cleaned the old stock paste that came with the stock intel fan I was forced to use (because the Arctic Cooler wouldn't fit) off like 1.5 weeks ago to ready up for conan =)
Death is but a doorway; Here, let me get that for you.
