How did I become computer illiterate?

Post by thehornfreak84 » Mon Sep 20, 2010 8:00 pm

So.... I bought a computer 7 years ago. Even though Matt helped me pick it out, I still knew quite a bit about what I was looking for. However, I no longer know what specs are good for a computer, where to look to get a computer, what price I should expect to pay for one, etc.

Can I get specs on some people's computers and about how much I'd expect to pay for certain levels of quality. I'm looking to go from having the worst computer in the guild to having the best one, so I can revel in the glory for at least a month or two.

Okay, let's take this piece by piece. It has been a few months since I last checked on prices, but I'll source some sites to help.

Video Card: (Between $200-$300)
ATI HD 5830 - $210 ($190 after rebate) or $190 ($170 AR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814121367
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150497

GeForce GTX 460 - $230 ($210 AR) or $250
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127510
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130568

ATI HD 5850 - $255 ($240 AR)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150477

It get much more expensive for single cards past this point. If you want more, look for Crossfire (2x cards) will get better performance for comparable prices. Cards like:

ATI Radeon HD 5770 x2 $140 Each ($125 AR) - Between $280 and $250
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102873

Bed time! I'll start looking up other pieces tomorrow. :3

Thanks for the info Rory. I think I'll start by choosing a processor and mobo before I pick a graphics card though I'll probably get something top notch.

BTW, how much is it gonna cost to fly you out here and build it for me?
