Laptop for xmas

Post by Nokturnal » Thu Nov 25, 2010 5:30 am

I'm thinking about buying Liza a laptop for Christmas. My price range is about $700 to $800, but hopefully closer to $700. I've been shopping for a few days and from reading all the reviews, it seems like ASUS and Dell are decent and reliable. Here are the specs that I'm looking for:

Intel Core i5
4 GB of RAM
320 GB HDD (7200 RPM) or 500 GB HDD (5400 RPM)

Graphics aren't as important, but I would like something that can handle games like Sims. For hard drives, is the difference between 7200 RPM and 5400 RPM substantial? Is it worth going down to 320 GB but with a faster speed? I really want a 17" screen, but how are the 15's? 15.6" seems like a popular choice.

I've never had a laptop before so this is really all new to me. I know that she'll mostly be using it for surfing and won't care much about specs, but it's important to me!

We'll be using it in the house mostly. So it's not as important. I was looking at the Dell Inspirion i17r. It had all the specs I was looking for for around $730.

http://www.ibuypower.com/ is having some decent laptop deals for a 48-hour black friday sale. If you bump down the processor and possibly another thing or two it should be well within your budget and hopefully more powerful than anything she'll ever need.

I checked ibuypower.com and they only have gaming laptops. Has anyone owned a Dell laptop before? If so, what do you think of it?

My mom used to buy Dell laptops exclusively, but stopped because they never lasted more than a year. I have heard quality has improved, but if hasn't then I would steer clear. The quality at Lenovo is much higher.

I think Asus and Acer both also make good affordable machines.

I've never owned a Dell laptop, but my first computer was a Dell, and while it worked fine for about a year and a half, after that my hard drive died. Even though it was under warranty still, they wouldn't replace it, saying that I had caused it to die somehow.

I'd steer clear of Dell period.

I really don't know much about laptops unless they're gaming caliber. Mac's are pretty damn solid, and they make Sims for Mac now too.

what about hp? I don't know a lot about laptops having never owned one, but I had a hp desktop for 5+ years and it's STILL in good condition as far as I know (passed it on to my brother after I upgraded).
