Getting Started: Videos and Links

Post by Xelissa » Sun Dec 01, 2013 9:58 am

Hey everyone. Tyler and I are excited about your interest in joining us for Pathfinder! Some of you might not be familiar at all with tabletop RPGs. That's perfectly fine! We're still learning ourselves. Tackling the Pathfinder PRD from the start might seem daunting, so we are going to assemble some links and videos to help you get started.

PART ONE: THE BASICS
People who are brand new, or mostly new to RPGs should definitely start here. If you are more familiar with them (e.g. you've played some D&D in the past), it would certainly be wise to browse through the links to refamiliarize yourself with the basic rules, and make sure you're up-to-date on any changes or differences that might exist in Pathfinder from other RPGs you've played.

There's a series of videos on YouTube that seem quite well-done about walking you through Pathfinder and teaching you the game. If you're new or relatively new to RPGs, start at the Basics below. It covers ability scores, races, and classes. When you watch the video, make sure you have a character sheet pulled up so you can reference it during the video:

Character sheet: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/resources (under Pathfinder RP game sheets section, left side, top link)

Here are links to the corresponding entries in the PRD, if you want to go back and look at them, or if you have any questions about them. Be warned that if you're starting out brand new, you might be assaulted by a bunch of extra information on these pages. I'd greatly encourage you watch the video first or better yet, pull up these pages WHILE you're watching it!!:

PRD Index to Topics Covered:
* Ability Scores and Common Terms
* Core Races
* Core Classes

==============================================
PART TWO: SKILLS, FEATS, AND EQUIPMENT

This part covers skills, assigning skill points, making checks (and what the dice mean), feats, and buying gear. Once again, make sure you have a character sheet at hand so you can understand what they're talking about! You don't have to make a character while you watch, but later you'll be able to more easily find the information you want if you already know where it should be!

Also, if you have a class in mind, it would be beneficial to have the PRD open to that class, since they're mostly talking about the monk. Indexes below!
Core Classes
Advanced Players' Guide Classes

PRD Index to Topics Covered:
* Skills
* Skill Descriptions/Table
* Feats
* Equipment

Now this section gets a little more mathy and has a lot of tables/things to remember. If it gets too overwhelming, don't worry about it! Make an appointment with me or Tyler and we can help you figure things out!

PART THREE: COMBAT

This one covers combat, and reading the relevant values from your character sheet.

PRD Index to Topics Covered:
* Combat
* Quick cheat sheet (terms and actions)

===============================================
That's it for now! Let me know if you have any issues, problems or questions either via the forums or email. If you're feeling ambitious, or most of this stuff was review, feel free to continue onto their next video on Sessions.

They are long but informative. The girl they are explaining them to is a beginner like me (although I think I'm a step up from her because I've at least heard of these terms/abbreviations before and know what they do due to NWN) and they do a really good and thorough job of breaking it down.

Since it sounds like some of you guys have started watching/reading this stuff, so I posted Part 2. Don't stress if you haven't gotten to Part 1 yet, I just wanted to get some stuff up for people who are ready for it. As always, let me know if you have any questions.
